Think Big, Act Wild, with Rewilding Britain

Rewilding Britain is a UK-based charity and organisation dedicated to promoting and implementing rewilding projects across the country. Founded in 2015, Rewilding Britain aims to restore ecosystems to their natural state by allowing natural processes to occur, reintroducing native species, and creating a more balanced and biodiverse environment.

Key Goals and Activities

  • Rewilding Across Landscapes: Rewilding Britain supports rewilding projects on various scales, from local initiatives to expansive, landscape-level efforts, spanning both urban and rural areas. Their work extends across the land-to-sea continuum, with projects ranging from the reintroduction of beavers and lynx on land to the restoration of seagrass meadows and kelp forests in marine environments. These initiatives not only rejuvenate ecosystems but also provide social and economic benefits, such as increased biodiversity, enhanced tourism, and improved ecosystem services like flood management.

  • Advocacy and Policy: A key part of Rewilding Britain’s mission is to advocate for policies that support rewilding and ecosystem restoration, the current lack of which is slowing down results. The organisation collaborates with governments, local authorities, landowners, and communities to integrate rewilding practices into policy frameworks, promoting systemic change for sustainable land and sea management.

  • Rewilding Network: Rewilding Britain connects rewilding projects across the nation through the Rewilding Network. This platform fosters collaboration, shares best practices, and empowers small-scale rewilders, helping to create a cohesive and supportive community committed to rewilding.

  • Education and Awareness: Raising public awareness is central to Rewilding Britain’s work. The organisation provides resources, research, and case studies to highlight the importance of rewilding and its benefits for both nature and people. By educating the public and inspiring action, they aim to broaden the reach and impact of rewilding efforts across the UK.

Vision and Impact

Rewilding Britain envisions at least 30% of the UK’s land and sea being rewilded by 2030. This ambitious goal reflects their commitment to addressing biodiversity loss and climate change by creating wilder, more resilient ecosystems. As a leading voice in the rewilding movement, the organisation is working to shift public perceptions and land management practices towards more sustainable and ecologically sound approaches.

Through fostering partnerships, driving innovative projects, and advocating for systemic change, Rewilding Britain is playing a pivotal role in restoring the natural beauty and ecological health of the UK’s land- and seascapes.
